Long Bio
Robert Lanz is a Berlin-based contemporary artist of German-Polish nationality working across experimental painting, sculpture, and interdisciplinary research. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) in 2011, followed by a postgraduate Meisterschüler degree with distinction in 2013, both under the mentorship of painter Leiko Ikemura.
His practice emerges from the intersection of art, science, and alchemy — treating the canvas as a laboratory where chemical reactions, crystallization, corrosion, and scarring become both process and subject. Working with unconventional materials including copper, magnetite, tar, epoxy resin, boat paint, shellac, and crushed gemstones, Lanz investigates transformation, materiality, and the tension between control and surrender.
Major bodies of work include DIS/PERSION (2025), a performative fragmentation of a large-scale painting dispersed across 82 glass vials, each linked via QR code to an NFT counterpart; Tsantsa Nova (2025), a series of occult-charged sculptures employing alchemical processes of solutio, coagulatio, and calcinatio; and Hermes fliegen falle, a luxurious re-coding of consumer objects that challenges notions of value and ritual.
Lanz has exhibited in solo and group presentations across Germany, with solo shows at Galerie Evelyn Drewes, Hamburg (2018) and Braunschweiger Privatbank (2016), and group exhibitions including HYPERVOID at Studio Berlin (2025), WIR MAGIER at Galerie Evelyn Drewes (2017), and APRIVATE/PUBLICK at Städtische Galerie Schloss Wolfsburg (2015). His work is held in the collection of Kunststiftung Perdita & Hans Peter Kunze, and he was the recipient of the Stipendium der Kunststiftung Kunze in 2013.
